Subject: Pavement Maintenance and Renewal

Dear  Councillors,
I  am  very  frustrated  by  the  way  money  is  wasted  by  the  Derbyshire  highway  planner.  Perhaps  not  wasted  but  given  wrong  priority,  as  though  some  money   left  in  a  buget  is  spent  haphazardly.

Recently  on  my  way  to  Illkeston  I  have  been  delayed  by  lights  on  School  Lane,  Stanton  By  Dale,  adjacent  to  Barbados  Cottage.  The  work  in  progress  was  laying  kerb  stones  as  access  to  a  farm  fiield !  and  Erewash  Valley  Golf  Clubs  [no  longer  used  as  a  car  park]  entrance. Why?

This  same  outfit  from  the  council  with  top  of  the  range [ costing  thousands]  equipment  spent  a  lot  of  time  around  the  Sawley  area  supposedly  repairing  roads,  look  at  the  effort  made  opposite  Ingleby/Repton  Road   for  example,  transformed  from  level  to  a  bump. Why?

Pavements  in  Repton  Road  are  a  disgrace  to  a  third  world  society  and  before  long  someone  will  have  a  bad  accident. Can  you  let  me  know  why  money  is  being  spent  [FIRST]  on  projects  in  remote  country  areas  and  roads  that  in  my  opinion  were  perfectly  ok. I  would  guess  that  the  money  spent  at  Stanton  and  good  Sawley  estate  roads  could  have  been  used  to  remove  half  of  Sawley  footpath  slabs  and  replaced  with  Tarmac.

Regards  JOHN  ECKERSLEY
Reply from Sawley Parish Council:
With regards to the 1st section all persons should write to Erewash Borough Council, as this is dealt with at Borough Level.
With regards to Repton Road, the Parish Council is aware of this and is trying to resolve this situation.

Subject: Sawley Future
Hi
I have just read your Sawley Newsletter and I have to write and congratulate you on the excellent way you have presented it and to wish you every success with it.
My name is June Spooner nee Tipping and I live in Ontario Canada.  I am an ex Sawleyarian related through Walter and Mary Evans who owned and ran the Newspaper Shop at the corner of Mikado Road and Tamworth Road and I grew up at 99 Wilsthorpe Road, corner of Carlton Rd., where my parents Ernie and Mary Tipping ran the Newspaper Shop there.
I am related to lots of the Willmotts, Smedleys, Rices and Williamsons etc., in Sawley, and of course related to a large number of the people who are now buried in the All Saints Churchyard.
If anyone still living in the Sawley area would care to write to me then I would be very happy to correspond with them and my e-mail address is:    june.spooner@sympatico.ca.
I hope that you will  continue to produce the Sawley Newsletter and I look forward to reading all about Sawley on a regular basis.
One never really leaves 'home' and to me Sawley and the Sawley people are and always will be 'my home'.
    My best wishes
        June
